Marking Time

This Historic Environment Scotland exhibition will take you on a journey from the present day to some of the oldest markings to be found in Scotland.

When you see a carved stone or a recent piece of graffiti, what do you think? Do you see the marking, the message or the meaning behind them?

Featuring images from across Scotland’s historic environment, this exhibition will help you to explore the range of markings, the clear and hidden messages, and the intentions of the writers. It highlights stories of love, wars, artists, and everyday events that have inspired people to create lasting messages from Stranraer to Scalloway and St Abbs to Stornoway.
