Three Perthshire Archaeological Sites to Add to Your List

Three Perthshire Archaeological Sites to Add to Your List

Welcome to Perthshire, where you can cover hundreds of years of Scottish history with just a handful of sites.

Pore Over Dupplin Cross
Head over to St Serf’s Church in Dunning and pop into the former parish church to find this rare example of a Pictish Cross (pictured above), which was probably carved around AD 800. The Historic Environment Scotland stewards are welcoming and very knowledgeable.

Climb up to Moot Hill
Refuel with lunch and head over to Scone Palace to explore one of the most significant sites in Scottish history. Turn right on the path and wander up the hill (pictured) to find the replica of the Stone of Scone, which marks the site of the original.

You’re now standing in the spot where Robert the Bruce declared himself King of Scots and King Charles II was crowned. Take a moment to soak in the atmosphere.

Relax at Huntingtower Castle
Raids, conspiracies and executions! End the day with a trip to this (now) peaceful place, which once played host to Mary Queen of Scots. Unwind in the garden before traversing through the castle’s bizarre layout to find the secret hiding place and admire one of the oldest painted ceilings surviving in Scotland.

If you want to know more about these sites, we’ve covered all of them on our YouTube channel.
