Join AOC Archaeology to excavate at Sprouston, Kelso.
The site is a multi-period settlement site right on the River Tweed, first identified through cropmarks in the 1980s and 90s. There are likely early prehistoric features such as a proposed Neolithic causewayed enclosure, timber halls, later prehistoric enclosures and palisades and an Anglian town, with buildings likely dating to around the 7th century AD.
The team will be excavating evaluation trenches across a few of these features to try and pick apart the chronology, form and function of the features and there are opportunities to get involved in excavation, deposit sieving and recording.
Volunteering days: Tuesday 21 July to Saturday 25 July; Tuesday 28 July to Saturday 1 August; and Tuesday 4 August to Friday 7 August.
Sign up through the link below for all the days you want to come. You are welcome to come along for just a day as a taster or for the whole dig. If you are able we would recommend booking several consecutive days or a few days each week to get more experience in different parts of the process.
Young people below the age of 16 are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult (unless on a pre-arranged work experience placement) – please book tickets for all members of the group so the organisers can track numbers.
Please note the last few days will most likely be focussing on finishing up recording and backfilling sensitive areas by hand.
