Burghead Dig 2026

The Northern Picts return to Burghead to uncover more of the early medieval Pictish stronghold, funded by Historic Environment Scotland and the University of Aberdeen.

Visitors are welcome to observe the excavations during the digging season, or drop by on their open day on 22 August to experience a tour, Pictish stone carving demonstrations with Monikie Rock Art, leathercraft demonstrations with Pictavia leather, and much more.

While Dig It! takes every opportunity to ensure that this information is accurate, we advise that you contact the event organiser before attending the event to avoid disappointment. As “transport is Scotland’s biggest contributor to climate change” according to Net Zero Scotland, Dig It! also encourages you to walk, wheel, cycle or use public transport to arrive at this event if possible.
